Nadia Comaneci was born on December 12, 1961 within Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast, and holds the record for being recognized with 10/10 scores during an Olympic performance. Comaneci was first discovered by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics instructor when she was six years old. She first competed at the junior national championships of Romania in the year 1969, she finished 13th. In 1970, she the Romanian gymnast won. The first time she competed in an international event, which was an Olympic-style junior preolympic competition for nations in the Communist bloc, she was awarded three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975, she won awarded the All-around Junior Champion. When she competed for the first time as a senior athlete in the year 1975, she bested the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion, winning four gold and one silver medal.
